Natural Ventilation
Bringing fresh, natural air into your home improves wellbeing and increases the sustainability of your home.
Whether you’re renovating or building your dream home, planning for effective natural ventilation will create a more comfortable and sustainable home.
It contributes to healthier living by improving indoor air quality and reducing humidity, simply by making the most of Mother Nature.
How Natural Ventilation Works
Natural ventilation uses outside air movement and pressure differences to cool and ventilate your home.
Strategically placed windows and doors, along with the use of vents, enhances to natural airflow with cooling breezes taking the heat out, helping your home to reset its temperature.
This increases the sustainability of your home (and the cost of cooling it) by reducing your reliance on air conditioning.
Optimising Natural Ventilation in your new home or renovation
Planning is key if you want to make the most of natural ventilation in your new home or renovation project.
We’ll need to consider how air naturally moves through your space so we can make design choices that allow you take advantage (for example) of the sea breezes we enjoy on the Mornington Peninsula.
Together, we would look at things like:
Optimal positioning of windows and doors
This will depend on the climate you’re building in, and the position of the building site, so we can orient your home to take advantage of the breeze.
Window fittings and sizes that direct and deflect airflow
The design and size of the windows you choose for your home can effect airflow and help to direct air in, as well as deflecting it from entering your home at all.
Where to position your doors and windows
Cross ventilation is important when optimising your home for natural ventilation. Wind doesn’t simply blow through a building - it’s actually attracted towards areas of low air pressure, causing it to be sucked in to your home. So we’ll place openings in a way that allows breezes to be pulled through.
Automatic Ventilation Systems
By installing automatic ventilation systems, your home will be able to adjust window opening based on internal temperatures to release and regulate heat - even when you’re not at home.
